How Far Does an Avalanche Beacon Reach?

2.275 kHz

The avalanche transceiver is a transistor radio-sized device that transmits an audible signal that rescuers can follow by flipping switches. The transmitter sends the signal at a frequency of 2.275 kHz, while the receiver receives the signal at 457 kHz. In the U.S., the transmitter's frequency is 2.275 kHz; in Europe, the frequency is 457 kHz.

The original avalanche transceiver was developed by Dr. John Lawton, a scientist at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in Buffalo, New York. It used a high frequency to pick up the signal, an antenna for direction, and a volume-based location system. This device was sold under the Skadi brand name, and had a range of 27 metres.

The newer beacons use a higher frequency that can be heard by humans. Older beacons used to only have a single antenna, but newer ones use two or three antennas to provide better accuracy.

LED Augmentation of Avalanche Beacons

LED augmentation of avalanche beacon systems is a promising technology for ensuring the safety of avalanche victims. Originally, avalanche beacons used a pulse signal transmitted as an audible tone. The audible tone is louder the closer the beacon is to the buried victim. Over time, beacons were augmented with LEDs for improved signal strength, as well as with earpieces so that the listener can hear the audio tone more easily. Since the 1970s, LED augmentation of avalanche beacon systems has become common. Range of Avalanche Beacons
